Sandfly bites

Bites from sandflies, which are found in most warm climates and can pass disease to humans.  In subtropical and tropical areas they transmit leishmaniasis.  In some parts of the Mediterranean and Asia they transmit sandfly fever, an illness similar to influenza.  In the Western Andes, they transmit bartonellosis, different forms of which cause either fever or a rash and joint pain.  The risk of bites can be minimised by wearing clothing with long arms and legs that fits tightly at the wrists and ankles, and using insect repellent, particularly after dusk (when the flies are most active).
