Pernicious anaemia

A form of anaemia (reduced blood levels of the oxygen carrying pigment haemoglobin) caused by the stomach lining failing to produce intrinsic factor – which is needed for absorption of vitamin B12.  The resulting deficiency of vitamin B12 stops bone marrow from making normal red blood cells.
