Peritonsillar abscess

An abscess (collection of pus) in the soft tissue around the tonsils that arises as a complication of tonsillitis.  A peritonsillar abscess, also known as quinsy, causes swallowing difficulties, pain and jaw stiffness.  The tonsils appear asymmetrical.  Analgesic drugs and antibiotic drugs are generally given to help alleviate the symptoms, and in certain cases a iny surgical incision can be made to drain the abscess.
