Parathyroidectomy
Surgical removal of unusual tissue from the parathyroid glands. Parathyroidectomy can be carried out to treat hyperparathyroidism (excessive secretion of parathyroid hormones). Less frequently, it can be used to treat parathyroid cancer.
If hyperparathyroidism is caused by an adenoma (a little, benign tumour), mainly only one of the parathyroid glands is involved and needs to be removed. If all the glands are overactive and enlarged, more parathyroid tissue can be removed.
