Pancytopenia
A severe and simultaneous reduction in the numbers of red blood cells (causing anaemia); white blood cells (a condition named leucopenia); and platelets, involved in clotting. This condition can be a result of injury or damage to the bone marrow, where blood cells are created; such damage can be caused by cancer in the marrow, or to destruction of the marrow by anti cancer drugs or radiotherapy. Pancytopenia can also be caused by hypersplenism (over activity of the spleen), in which the spleen kills excessive numbers of blood cells.
