Barretts oesophagus

A complication of a long term gastro-oesophageal reflux in which the cells that line the lower part of the oesophagus are replaced by cells that are usually found in the stomach.  Those with Barretts oesophagus are at an increased risk of developing an ulcer in the oesophagus, oesophageal cancer and oesophageal stricture.  The condition can be monitored regularly by endoscopy (internal examination using a viewing instrument) and biopsy (removal of a sample of tissue for analysis) of the oesophagus.
