Nutritional disorders

Nutritional disorders can be caused by a deficiency or excess of one or more nutrients or, by the presence of toxins (poisonous elements) in the diet or lifestyle.

Nutritional deficiency

A diet deficient in carbohydrates often leads to protein-calorie malnutrition, which most often arises as a result of extreme poverty and hunger.

Insufficient intake of calories and protein can also arise in those who restrict their diet excessively to lose weight, have mistaken beliefs about health and diet, or have lost interest in food due to drug dependence or alcohol dependence.

Deficiency of specific nutrients is widely associated with a disorder of the digestive system, such as coeliac disease or pernicious anaemia.
