Neurosyphilis
Infection of the spinal cord or brain that arises in untreated syphilis a number of years after the initial infection.
Damage to the spinal cord caused by neurosyphiliis can cause tabes dorsalis, a condition marked by poor coordination off leg movements when walking, intermittent pains in the abdomen, and urinary incontinence, and pain in the limbs. Damage and injury to the brain can cause muscle weakness, dementia, and in unusual cases, complete paralysis of all the limbs.
