A genetic disorder, also known as Menkes’ syndrome, in which body cells do not absorb enough copper. The condition is apparent from from birth. It creates kinky, brittle hair; hypotonia (abnormal muscle slackness); seizures; feeding problems; and degeneration of brain tissue. The children affected will die after a few years.
Kinky-hair disease is an X-linked disorder; it affects only baby boys, but females can carry the gene. Those people with a family history of this disorder can have genetic counselling before having children.
