A type of hernia in which part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall in the groin. It can be either indirect or direct. In an indirect inguinal hernia the intestine pushes through the inguinal passage (in men the canal throught which the testes descend into the scrotum). An indirect inguinal hernia can also arise in females.
In direct inguinal hernia, there is a localised weakness in the abdominal wall through which the intestine pushes.
