Water intoxication

Excessive water retention in the brain has a number of causes, such as kidney failure, severe heart failure, disease of the adrenal glands and certain lung or ovarian tumours.  The symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and in the more severe cases, seizures and unconsciousness.

It is also linked to the use of ecstasy (MDMA) which dehydrates the body and causes the user to drink excessive amounts of water.  There is also a risk after surgery, due to increased ADH production.
