Virilism
The presence in a woman of masculine characteristics, caused by too high levels of androgen hormones. Androgens are male sex hormones which, in, women are usually secreted in small amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands.
Heightened levels induce a number of changes in women, including hirsutism (excessive hairiness); male pattern baldness; cessation or disruption of menstruation; enlargement of the clitoris; loss of normal fat deposits around the hip area; development of the shoulder and arm muscles; and deepening of the voice.
