Variant angina

A type of angina pectoris (chest pain caused by insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle), also known as Prinzmetal’s angina, in which chest pain arises when at rest, usually during sleep. The pain can be accompanied by palpitations and breathlessness. Variant angina is believed to be due to narrowing of the coronary arteries by muscular spasm in their walls. Treatment with calcium channel blockers or nitrate drugs is often effective.
